A PSI project is an investment project carried out by a Dutch (or foreign) company in cooperation with a local company, in one of the developing countries for which PSI has been established. PSI subsidizes the project, which consists both of hardware (such as machines) and technical assistance (such as training, project management).
The project has an innovative effect for the country in question. This innovative investment is geared toward helping undeveloped markets to expand and grow. The innovative character might take the form of a new product, production method, or technology in the developing country. PSI reduces risks for the company making such an investment. The project contributes to long-lasting cooperation amongst the various companies. The intention is that once the project period is over, follow-up investments will be realized to lead to additional growth in sales and job creation. Moreover, the project should be commercially feasible, and have a positive impact on the local economy.
